Moving
Movers
Whether you're moving one block away, or several states away, it takes a lot of time, patience, and above all, a sense of adventure. We can help minimize the drama with our handy Mover's Countdown Guide. Plus, you'll find many helpful tools and tips in our Local Resources section.
Mover's Countdown
No need to stress...just develop a plan, and then follow it!
30 days before...
- Determine what you are going to move and start getting rid of everything else. You'll thank yourself later.
- Decide what you are going to pack yourself and what the movers will pack. The mover is not responsible for breakage of items you pack. Obtain packing cartons from the mover.
- Notify the post office of your new address. Fill out change of address cards, or better yet, do it online.
- Gather medical and dental records for all family members if you will need to change doctors.
- Notify schools and arrange to have transcripts and records forwarded to the new schools.
- If moving out of town, remember that once a credit union member, always a member. Be sure to sign up for DUFCU i-Access (if not enrolled already).
2 weeks before...
- Start packing. Do a little at a time. Don't try to do it all in a day or two.
- Return borrowed items and reclaim items borrowed from you.
- Arrange disconnect/connect dates with local utilities.
- Develop a floor plan to show the movers where you want your belongings placed in your new home. Some graph paper, a tape measurer and scissors are all you require. Need ideas? Check out HGTV and TLC for some great tips.
1 week before...
- Dispose of all flammable materials properly. Not sure how? Go to www.disposal.com.
- Dismantle outdoor play or gym equipment.
- If moving out of town, transfer items from your safe deposit account to take with you.
- Pack items you want to move yourself and mark "do not move."
1 day before...
- Disconnect water lines, empty and defrost your refrigerator and freezer; let the appliances air out for 24 hours. What a great excuse to eat out! Same goes for your washing machine. A great excuse to go shopping, maybe?
- Finish packing personal items.
- Get a good night's sleep. If that means going to a nice hotel, go for it.
Moving day...
- Be present to answer movers' questions. Suggestion - if you have little kids, park them at a friend's house for the day. You'll both appreciate it.
- Accompany movers through the house for an inventory of things to be moved.
- Confirm destination address with van operator. Also confirm time and date of delivery. Exchange cell phone numbers, just in case.
- Close all windows, turn out all lights, and lock all doors.
- Say goodbye to your house, and get ready to create new memories at your NEW house.
After the move...
- Notify the Credit Union of your address change. Fill out this address change form and mail it to us at DUFCU: 2200 West Main St, Suite L100, Durham, NC 27705
- Order new checks, i-check reorder
- Visit the local DMV and apply for a license and register your vehicle
- Update the billing address for all of your creditors, insurance companies, investment accounts and anything else you receive billings for regularly.
- Send out a "We've Moved" card to notify friends and family of your new address
